Scotty is cast free!

Scott's two weeks in the cast was up today. He's been waiting for this day...well, for two weeks now, but the last few days have been the hardest. He's done really well. He's been patient and sweet in asking for help without being demanding or difficult. He's even mastered his crutches and motors pretty darn quickly with them. Here he is in the orthopedic's office waiting room waiting for his final x-rays.

Scott wasn't sad to see this cast go. This very friendly person also put his cast on for him. She was very nice and didn't even complain about all the pictures I was taking either time we were in the office.

This whole procedure only took a few minutes and in no time at all, there was a nice even cut all around Scott's leg and foot.

Once cut, the fiberglass was pried open,

and taken off of Scott's leg.

Then he was left with a lot of fuzzy cotton which was also cut away. His foot was x-rayed again, and then  the doctor came in. He studied the x-rays and poked and prodded Scotty's foot. He had him walk around, which Scott did, but he was nervous about it. It hurt him so much to walk on it before it was casted that he was afraid to put much weight on it. After some urging, he took enough steps to satisfy the doctor who declared him healed enough to keep the cast off.

There are some limitations, however. He can walk on it, but has to take it easy for the next couple of days. We were told that swimming would be excellent therapy, but Scott isn't allowed to participate in any of the dry land training the coaches have started for swim team for at least two weeks. I think we are going to go to the pool and Scott is going to do some easy laps on Friday, just to give his foot some exercise. The doctor said Scott's foot might feel achy and get tired quickly in the next week or so, but he doesn't expect to see us back unless Scott experiences pain.

We were happy and as we were getting ready to leave, I realized that we hadn't brought a shoe for Scotty's left foot. Silly, move, mom! Hey, it was nearly 90 degrees and the car was parked close. Scott used his crutches anyway so it wasn't the worst thing I could've forgotten...

He's doing well, although I will give him some Advil before bed so he can sleep soundly. He says it is aching just a little bit, but, as you can see, he's handling it just fine. He got to talk to Steven, who stayed up late, (he's six hours ahead of us in Germany) to be sure everything went okay at the doctor. It's hard on a dad knowing your kid is dealing with this stuff and not being here to help him through it. Scott's doing good, though...even though he has some pretty dirty toes right now.

I told Maya she needed to keep all of her limbs intact. Her answer? "I'll give it a shot." I've seen enough doctors and ER's to last me a good long time.

Here's to good health and well being!
